Overview
Thank you for using Greener Kirkcaldy’s Bairns Bike Library. This document sets out the Terms and Conditions for using this service. Please read it carefully and make sure you confirm you have done so on the booking platform during the booking process.
1. General
The Bairns Bike Library allows people to borrow kids bikes of any size, and associated safety equipment, for use by any child of primary school age who lives in Fife.
- The Bairns Bike Library is only available for children who live in Fife, up to and including the age of 12 years old.
- People can borrow kids bikes for as long as they need them and there is no limit of how many bikes each borrower can take on loan (assuming one bike per child).
- A “borrower” is defined as the adult who make the initial booking and deposit payment of each bike.
- Each “loan period” is for 6 months – at the end of each loan period the bike must be returned to Greener Kirkcaldy for service before the loan will be extended.
- There is an initial £50 deposit payment per child, after which there are no more costs associated with borrowing and servicing the bikes borrowed during the loan period.
- The deposit will be returned at the end of the loan period, or can be donated to Greener Kirkcaldy at the request of the borrower.
- There may be additional costs to the borrower for significant repairs due to misuse or negligence that fall out-with usual wear and tear. The first £50 of these costs will be subtracted from the deposit.
- If, for any circumstances, Greener Kirkcaldy has to cease operations of the Bairns Bike Library, then all borrowed bikes and equipment will have to be returned within 1 month unless otherwise specified. Borrowers will be individually notified in such circumstances.
- From time to time, Greener Kirkcaldy may contact borrowers to request feedback on the programme so that they can report to funders.
- Greener Kirkcaldy will contact borrowers to remind them when bikes are due to be returned, although the responsibility to return the items at the end of the loan period remains with the borrower.
- For the duration of the loan period, all bikes, helmets, locks and lights remain the property of Greener Kirkcaldy.
- Borrowers agree not to offer for sale, trade, dispose, mortgage, lend, pledge or otherwise part with possession of the rental cycle(s) or equipment.
- Borrowers are responsible for the secure storage of the bikes and equipment throughout the loan period. If a bike or equipment is lost or stolen during the loan period, the borrower will be responsible for the cost of replacement.
- Greener Kirkcaldy reserve the right to refuse current or potential borrowers access to the Bairns Bike Library at any time.
- The collection and return point for all bikes borrowed from the Bairns Bike Library will be Lang Toun Cycles, 247 High Street, Kirkcaldy, KY1 1JF.
2. Reserving Bikes
- Upon registration, customers must provide their card details and proof of address in order to be able to access the service. This is to ensure that Greener Kirkcaldy can be compensated if bikes are not returned or if there are any problems with the bikes, as detailed in clause 3.2.
- Providing that bikes are returned on time for service at the end of the loan period, customers will not be charged at any point. Failure to return bikes on time, however, may result in a £10 charge per bike, per week. Borrowers will be contacted towards the end of their loan period to remind them of the expected return date.
- Borrowers must choose a pick-up date and time when they reserve a bike. If your are not able to collect the bike on that date, please contact us as soon as you can to arrange a different day and time. We will hold reserved bikes for one week, and if customers have not got in touch with us within that period the reservation will be cancelled.
- We aim to have a selection of bikes of all sizes available, however, depending on uptake and on what bikes are returned and otherwise available to us, we may be short of a specific size from time to time.
- The bikes we provide will be a mix of new and refurbished bikes, so we cannot offer particular brands, models and colours. All bikes will have been fully serviced and safety checked by qualified mechanics before being made available to borrow.
- Children receiving a free bike through the Bairns Bike Library are also entitled to receive a lock, lights and a helmet free of charge.
- Borrowers are entitled to keep the locks, lights and helmets for the entire loan period.
- Borrowers must return the lock and lights if they are no longer borrowing a bike from the Bairns Bike Library. For example, if a bike is returned and another bike is not taken out, Greener Kirkcaldy would require the lock and lights to be returned as well. Helmets cannot be returned to the Bairns Bike Library once they have been given out, so customers are entitled to keep these beyond the loan period.
- Although Greener Kirkcaldy provide a size guide, customers may occasionally reserve bikes that are the wrong size for their children. Providing that the right size of bike is available and it has not been reserved, customers will be able to collect that bike instead of the bike they reserved originally. Greener Kirkcaldy cannot, however, guarantee that this will be the case as the bikes available will vary at any given time.
- Adult-sized bikes are not covered by this programme. Bike sizes will include Kids Bikes with 14”, 16”, 18” and 20” wheel sizes and Junior Bikes with 24” wheels and Extra Small sized 26” and/or 27.5” wheeled bikes.
3. Problems with Bike during a Loan Period
- If the borrowed bike needs to be repaired or replaced due to a fault, please contact us so we can organise the repair or exchange. There is no fee for repairing or replacing a bike borrowed from the Bairns Bike Library during a loan period, except in the case of significant damage due to misuse or negligence. Please note that in some cases an alternative bike will be provided instead of a repair.
- If the bike has been lost, stolen or damaged beyond repair, please contact us to let us know. A fee would apply in these cases to cover the value of the bike. The value of the fee will vary depending on the bike, up to a maximum of £500.
4. Returning Bikes
- Customers can return their bike at any point, and they can choose to exchange it for the next size up if they wish, by arranging an appointment at the Active Travel Hub by emailing info@langtouncycles.org.uk.
- Customers may be charged if they fail to return a bike, as detailed in clause 3.2 above.
5. Safety
- It is the parent/guardian’s responsibility to ensure the rider’s safety. Cycling involves personal risk and anyone using a bike rented from the Bairns Bike Library must ride responsibly.
- First time or novice cyclists should use the equipment under the supervision of an experienced rider.
- All customers renting a bike from the Bairns Bike Library agree to use the bike at their own risk and Greener Kirkcaldy accepts no responsibility for death, personal injury or any direct loss suffered that can be associated with the use of the bike or the Bairns Bike Library service.
Greener Kirkcaldy hopes that you have a great experience using the Bairns Bike Library service.
